HEART CONTAINERS

Almost all ancient cultures buried the heart in a ceramic vase separated from the body. They thought the heart contained the soul of the dead and needed a separate container. I ask myself: where would we guard our hearts? And what do we guard in them?

The idea of life, death, and our footprints in the world led me down the path of funeral rituals and ceremonies, discovering this beautiful tradition of heart-burial jars. As research into global funerary vessels advanced, I explored both formal and symbolic elements – the jar body and lid; surface design and decoration. A first series of porcelain and glass works were developed in China in 2024.

After the first trials, I focused on five symbolic motifs: The Boat represents travels between life and death; The Hummingbird, as presented in many ancient cultures, such as the Nazca lines; The Owl, that speaks of wisdom, The House, as a refuge and nucleus of family and community; Human Figures, that speak of our humanity.

Further series were developed based on Celtic and Aztec mythologies in 2025, in Spain and Mexico, respectively.
